From Muddy Fields To
Industry Revolution
The untold story of how one man's frustration
built Britain's most innovative trailer manufacturer
Ray Larrington had a problem.
Running the largest agricultural contracting company in the UK, he was tired of wooden trailers breaking under the brutal demands of British farming. Weak axles. Rotten wood. Constant repairs.
So he did what any engineer would do: he built something better.
What started in a workshop became a revolution. When Richard took over the business in 1994, he didn't just continue the legacy—he transformed it through engineering excellence and relentless innovation.
This is the story of two innovators, one vision.
Ray Larrington
Ray didn't set out to build trailers—he set out to solve a problem. Running the UK's largest agricultural contracting company, he watched wooden trailers fail under the relentless demands of British farming.
His solution? Build them better. Starting in 1962, Ray created heavy-duty steel-bodied trailers with commercial axles that could withstand the strenuous working conditions his competitors couldn't handle.
Key Innovations
- 1962: Established largest UK agricultural contracting company
- 1965: First custom steel-bodied trailers with commercial axles
- 1972: Founded RL Trailers - dedicated manufacturing
- Built the foundation for 60 years of engineering excellence
Richard Larrington
When Richard took over in 1994, he didn't just maintain Ray's legacy—he revolutionized it. Moving the company from Brothertoft to Boston, he transformed Larrington into an engineering powerhouse that sets industry standards rather than following them.
Under Richard's leadership, Larrington became synonymous with innovation: the first single tipping ram, award-winning designs, patented chassis technology, and a relentless commitment to engineering excellence.
Engineering Revolution
- 1994: Relocated to Boston, modernised operations
- 1995: Developed first single tipping ram - industry breakthrough
- 1996: Created Majestic beet-heaping trailer, won LAMMA award
- 2006: Patented 'M' style folded & formed chassis
- 2011: Established UK-wide dealership network
- Continuous innovation: 20+ major product developments since 1994
The Larrington Standard
Four principles that have driven 60 years of innovation
Engineer It Right
No shortcuts. Our patented folded and formed chassis isn't just stronger than conventional box section—it's proof that proper engineering beats cost-cutting every time. When we designed the single tipping ram in 1995, everyone said twin rams were necessary. We proved them wrong.
Build It to Order
Your farm isn't a template, so why should your trailer be? Every Larrington is custom-built in Boston to your exact specifications. Chassis length, suspension type, brake system, paintwork—we don't compromise, and neither should you.
Innovate Relentlessly
First hydraulic taildoor (1978). First air suspension on agricultural trailers (1990). First to tip to 60° (1996). We didn't become industry leaders by following others—we set the pace. Our R&D doesn't stop because the competition can't keep up.
Stand Behind It
2-pack marine grade paint. Commercial-spec axles. British manufacturing. These aren't marketing terms—they're commitments. When a Larrington leaves our facility, it carries 60 years of reputation. We don't build disposable equipment.
